Work Based Learning Spotlight: Alija Contreras, Beau Cheveux My name is Alija Contreras and my workplace experience class this year is at Beau Cheveux. I shadow Lucy Bradney, the owner. Here are some of the items she sells and what I purchased from her salon in this photo. They are ideal for my hair, plus she has a ton of other hair-related things. I decided to job shadow in order to gain a better grasp of the workings of a cosmetologist. I've always wanted to job shadow a cosmetologist and watch her do what she does, like working her magic, and letting these women leave the salon happy. I'd like to continue doing hair, makeup, nails, lashes, eyebrows, tans, and other hair and makeup services, so having someone point me in that direction is really exciting for what this career path may bring. I watch her mainly do hair, such as cutting it shorter, coloring hair, and thinning it out. This allows me to make more educated judgments on my future route as I watch and observe her in the field I want to pursue when I'm older. I also get to discover how she got to where she is now and what she did to accomplish her career goals so I know what to do.

Please join us in congratulating the next recipient of the HES Red Hawk Hero award! The Red Hawk Hero exemplifies characteristics of a hero. Our next recipient is Heidi Diller. Heidi was nominated because Heidi has the innate ability to connect all of the students at HES despite their various abilities and differences through a craft that she has mastered. The product of this connection can be witnessed on a large scale through the music programs that she conducts or on a more intimate scale by spending just moments in her classroom. Heidi is willing to jump in and offer support, collaboration, and a team driven mindset in any given situation. There are a myriad of talents that she brings to HES on a daily basis but I believe one of the loudest comes in what may be her more quiet moments. She listens and offers stability to students in times that may seem jumbled. In these moments, and many others, she builds relationships with students that they will not forget. Work Based Learning Spotlight: Malaya Donato, BCKSEI I job-shadow school psychologist, Lisa Pierce, to better understand the psychology and behavioral health of students! It is an honor to understand the role of such a big job for one person. Mrs. Pierce develops a child's needs and consults with teachers, parents, and other school-based professionals to improve academic achievement for every student in Hiawatha! I picked this profession as my SDS because I plan on majoring in social work to be a therapist, so I wanted to be cognizant of how a child’s mind works.

Miss Riley's class earned 36 Hawk Blocks and celebrated with a fun-filled Camping Day! Hawk Blocks are awarded to students for demonstrating safe, respectful, and responsible behavior, and this group has done an amazing job earning them. To celebrate, we worked under tents with lanterns, read stories by the "campfire," and enjoyed s'mores cereal. It was a fun and memorable day for everyone! Work Based Learning Spotlight: Connor Kettler Hi my name is Connor Kettler. My SDS is inside the High School with AD and Vice Principal. I mainly shadow the AD side of the job since that falls under my major and possibly what I would like to do. My supervisor for this is Mr. Kettler who holds both these positions. I picked this place because it was simple to go to and because I am able to understand and learn more from settings that I am more comfortable in and are familiar with.
