Mrs. Dean's Creative Writing class and Mr. Leahy's Graphic Design class worked together on a gothic-inspired project. Creative Writing students each created their own gothic literature-style stories. Mr. Leahy's students then illustrated book covers to go with them.

A beautiful night of HHS vocal groups for the Winter Holiday Program lead by Mr Josh May. They did a tremendous job and it's always great to see the alumni joining them on stage!

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Michael Jensen, Amberwell Hiawatha
This is a picture after one of my days at Amberwell. I was organizing and cleaning two areas of the PT area. I got done working with a patient with Lisa and I was putting stuff up and while I was there I decided to organize the two areas for my Spotlight assignment. The band holder on the wall is new and I got to put the bands up there, the tied ones and the untied ones because before the holder was there they were just around some on the floor messy. The other area with the rollers and physical therapy balls I cleaned them up neatly and lined them up better then they were. This is going to help me after high school because as a physical therapist you need to be neat and clean when trying to find stuff for a patient so you don't take a lot of time trying to find the equipment you need so when you need something you can find it immediately instead of having to take a lot more time looking for it.

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Ethan Morton, Amberwell Hiawatha
I am currently enrolled in a job shadow at Amberwell Hiawatha for Physical Therapy. I chose to shadow here because physical therapists get the opportunity to help young athletes recover from injuries. Yes they do help with every age group but I am a big sports guy and have dealt with injuries before. This experience is going to help me after high school because it gives me a head start on my career in maybe being a physical therapist. It also helps be able to talk with patients about injuries and I get to know different ways and techniques to help them recover and get back to 100%. In the photo, I am putting new sheets on the bed after a patient was in the room. It is very important to make sure that every piece of used equipment is being sanitized and wiped down to stop the spread of germs. This is very important because we never want someone to get sick after going to physical therapy. I plan to enjoy the last month and a half of my experience at Amberwell Hiawatha.

Reminder Today- Friday, December 6th USD 415 will have an Early dismissal at 12:30 for professional development

HMS would like to thank WKG Sales and Service, Walker and Kyley Gatz, for the tour of their shop today. Some of our 8th graders have been learning about engines, trucking, and mechanics in their independent study and this was a great career connection for them! We were able to tour the facility, look at current trucks in the shop, compare truck parts to regular car parts and learn more about running a shop business!

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Brylie Williams, Amberwell Hiawatha
I am a junior at Hiawatha High School. I go to the emergency room 2 days a week for 2 hours. I shadow the nursing staff. When I go to the emergency room, I do all sorts of things. I take vitals, help stock, clean up, walk or wheel patients places, and most of all learn. I have learned how to feel for veins, what normal vitals are supposed to be like, what different sicknesses, illnesses, and diseases are, and lots of other things. I go to the emergency room to get a feel of what a rural community emergency room looks like. I go to get a better understanding of how it works and runs. My job shadow experience at the emergency room in Hiawatha is going to help me decide what area of medicine I want to go into after high school. It will help me see if I want to work in a big hospital or rural community. It will also help me decide whether I want to go into emergency medicine or something else. I have really enjoyed my time at Amberwell's emergency department and I can't wait to learn even more.
