Red Hawk Leaders worked to plan and implement their second after school activity, this time for first grade! Red Hawk Leaders led our first graders through two different books and hands-on activities. It has been incredible to witness our 4th graders in their leadership roles. They are providing our youngest students with excellent role models! 🔴🔵 #HESRedHawks #USD415 #RedHawkReady #Hiawathaks #HiawathaKansas #VisitHiawatha 🔴🔵

Congratulations to the Red Hawk Forensics team who competed at Marysville on Saturday! Senior Paige Mueller placed 3rd in prose qualifying her for state champs. She also placed 5th in POI (Program of Oral Interpretation). Junior Israel Ross placed 1st in Poetry qualifying him once again for State Champs, Israel also placed 5th in Prose qualifying him for state Festival. Senior Lexys Ruch placed 4th in POI. Senior Remmy Killman placed 3rd in POI. Senior Gavin Noll placed 7th in Prose. It was a great day to be a Red Hawk!
We know that understanding state qualifications for Forensics can be challenging. In a nut shell it's a numbers game. The more entries in an event they more possibilities for state qualifications.
Any state qualification is a big deal. Let us try to explain the forensics math and the difference between State Champs and State Festival. (State Speech & Drama)
State Festival is a "one and done" you perform your piece once and receive a rating of a 1, 2, 3, or 4 you only compete against yourself.
State Champs runs like a typical Forensics meet. At champs you have three regular rounds of competition. With the best in the state all competing. (Numbers cab range anywhere from 30 to 100+ in a category) After those three rounds they take the top 12 in each event. The top twelve compete again in Semi Finals. If you "break" in semi finals you then move on to finals competing against the top 6.
To qualify for state completely depends on the number of entries at the meet you are at and your performance that day.
Festival
Qualifying standards for individual events:
• 6-10 entries in the event - first and second place qualify
• 11-15 entries in the event - first, second, third and fourth place qualify
• 16-19 entries in the event - first, second, third, fourth and fifth place qualify
• 20+ entries in the event - first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place qualify
STATE CHAMPS
Qualifying standards:
• 6-25 entries in the event - first and second place qualify
• 26-40 entries in the event - first, second and third place qualify
• 41-60 entries in the event - first, second, third and fourth place qualify
• 61-80 entries in the event - first, second, third, fourth and fifth place qualify
• 81- above entries in the event - first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place qualify
We hope that helps you understand a bit more how our competitors place. Each student can only perform in 8 meets, and competition is tough. We are very proud of our Red Hawks who come ready each Saturday competing for over 8 hours to do their absolute best! We know more state qualifiers are in our horizon!

Please join us in congratulating our next HES Red Hawk Hero. A Red Hawk Hero is someone who exhibits characteristics of a hero. Our next recipient is Kelly Meyer, our library paraprofessional. Here is what her nomination stated: Kelly is a wonderful positive friend at HES. Each morning she greets the students, parents, and staff with upbeat music, a big smile, high-five, or a hug with a genuine hope for you to have a great day. She helps create a positive, warm, welcoming atmosphere in our library as well. Kelly works to find that "just right" book for students to help them fall in love with reading. She is always willing to help out with anything that may be a challenge for you and a breeze for her. There is no bad day that can't be turned around with a "Kelly hug"! #RedHawks #HES #HESRedHawks #RedHawkHero
