Work Based Learning Spotlight: Addy Kopp, Agriculture Internship, Ag Partners Cooperative
I job-shadow in the Agronomy department with Levi Lehmkuhl and Josh Hinkle. My tasks vary day-to-day, I haven’t done the same thing twice. So far, I have assisted in calibrating yield monitors and writing prescriptions for fields. My favorite moment so far is helping take out a variety plot by calculating the yields and testing each sample. This internship has made me more confident in my future. I look forward to attending Kansas State University this fall and will be majoring in Agronomy. I’m excited to see what the next semester will bring!

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Kacer Knudson, Healthcare Workplace Experience, McPeak Optometry.
In the picture, I'm using a slit lamp, which is equipment that optometrists routinely use. This device serves as a specialized magnifying microscope and is used to examine the structure of the eye. You can see the cornea, iris, vitreous, and retina with a slit lamp. I've been given the opportunity to observe several eye exams in which the slit lamp is used. When looking through the device, the eye is enlarged, and you can move the device around by using the joystick to gain a clearer perspective. It's fascinating to observe an eyeball through the slit lamp!
I would like to study pre-med after high school with the later goal of becoming an optometrist. This experience has been absolutely wonderful, and it has fueled my interest in a potential career. McPeak and his team are excellent teachers who are incredibly kind and patient. I look forward to the rest of this semester!
Work Based Learning Spotlight: Marcus Hinton: Architecture Research
I research different engineering majors, more specifically architectural, civil, and structural engineering majors. I also research different college classes I need to take to get different types of engineering majors and the different colleges that offer the best classes for the major I want to go into. I’m trying to do my research to pick the best engineering major for me. At this point in time I want to go into architectural engineering going to KU for my Bachelors and Masters and then if I want to going to Nebraska- Lincoln Engineering School for my PHD in Architectural engineering.
HHS Weekly Activities!
Work Based Learning Spotlight: Sutton Diller, Business Internship at the Hiawatha Chamber of Commerce.
My responsibilities include filing papers, saving newspaper articles, organizing, and making ribbons for several different local businesses. I am observing Mrs. Kleopfer and her event planning skills. Being a member of the Student Council, I have always been interested in planning events and serving the community. I thought this opportunity was a great way to learn different, more efficient planning techniques that I can apply to the events Student Council puts on. I also enjoy getting to see the behind-the-scenes of some of our city’s biggest events like the Maple Leaf Festival and the Halloween Parade.
Work Based Learning Spotlight: Abby Kettler, Teaching Internship, Hiawatha Elementary School
I am doing my teaching internship this year with Erin Sudbeck and her first graders at the Hiawatha Elementary School. I help out with anything from making copies, grading papers, and reading books to the children. I admire the way Mrs. Sudbeck teaches to her class. She is never aggressive or short tempered towards them and always treats them with the same grace and respect she hopes to get in return from them. She recognizes their strengths and weaknesses and truly cares about each of these kids so much. I can see this in the way she interacts with and responds to them. This is the kind of educator I hope to be one day. Beginning this internship, I hoped to gain experiences to determine whether or not I wanted to become an elementary school teacher. This experience has greatly contributed to the making of my final decision to major in Elementary Education at Pittsburg State University next fall.
Work Based Learning Spotlight: Riley Scott, Teaching Internship at Hiawatha Elementary School
Some of my responsibilities are helping students follow along with the reading and helping them with their worksheets and tests. Sometimes I do a small group table where I teach them how to say certain letters. I also sometimes grade tests and help Mrs. Sudbeck get things done that she needs done around the classroom. What I observe in my internship is how to teach younger students and what they say kind of looks like for them. I observe the worksheets they work on, how they read, spell, and say words. My goals I want to achieve by doing this internship is to see if I really want to become a teacher for younger kids. I chose this particular internship because I love working with younger kids and I want to pursue teaching as a career.

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. We honor America's military personnel, past & present, for their service to our country. We are thankful for these men & women who answered the call to serve. We thank you! 🇺🇸
Work Based Learning Spotlight: Zach Cappleman, Teaching Internship at Hiawatha Elementary School
I am doing my teaching internship with Amy Bearce-Plattner, the P.E. teacher at the Hiawatha Elementary School.
Some of the things I have been working on is teaching the kids how to play soccer and volleyball. Another thing is trying to see how a classroom environment works and how to further my skills in teaching. Some of the things I have learned from this class is that teaching takes time and patience.
Another thing I have learned is that all kids learn differently in different ways. For example, some kids like to learn by doing the activity live and some students learn by watching.
But all together this has been a fun experience for me so far and I hope to keep learning more about being a P.E. teacher!.
Hiawatha Elementary School would like to remind parents and guardians to have their student(s) wear their winter coats as the weather grows colder. We want to ensure students are warm for recess, and while we do have a few extra coats on hand, we did run out today. We know students enjoy the fun on the playground and their free time is much more fun when they are warm and cozy! Thank you for your help! #HESRedHawks
