Dear high school parents/guardians
This week, our students & staff began their continuous learning efforts. A combination of Google Classroom, Edgenuity and packet work is being utilized to meet this statewide directive.
By this point, all students should be working on their classwork. If your child has not yet begun, please encourage them to get started. When doing remote or online learning, it’s easy to put it off until later and then the student has dug themselves a hole that seems daunting to climb out of.
Just as a reminder, both Google Classroom, and Edgenuity can be put on smartphones, so this option may help in keeping on top of expectations. Rainbow Communications has installed many hotspots around our communities. Additionally, USD 415 has installed a new outdoor hotspot on top of the high school. Wifi will be available to students while sitting in vehicles in the high school parking lot.
All high school classes should have the week’s learning activities posted by the end of the day on Mondays. Your child (and you) should be able to look at their Google Classrooms on Monday evening and determine what needs to be done that week. This should aid in organizing the student’s time, expectations and responsibilities for the week.
If your child is completing their work via packets, packets can be picked up and returned Monday-Friday between 8 am and 4 pm at the high school office.
The district has established a Continuous Learning link via the district webpage: http://www.hiawathaschools.org/hiawatha-high-school-continuous-learning . Here you can find emails and office hours for your child’s teachers. Office hours are dedicated times each day that students can expect things to be graded, feedback provided, emails responded to, video chats scheduled, quizzes unlocked, etc.
A student tech assistance form is accessible on the district webpage, as well as in every Google Classroom if your child is experiencing problems with their USD 415 laptop. I would like to express my appreciation to our technology folks. They have been working constantly to keep up with these new technology demands.
We still have some student belongings here. If you think your child is still missing a personal item from school, call the office with a description of the item and where you think you left it. Feel free to reach out to specific teachers if you think something was left in that teacher’s classroom.
Meals continue to be offered at various locations around our school district. I would encourage you to take advantage of this service. It is available to any child ages 1-18 years old in our district.
As of now, we are still planning to follow the USD 415 calendar: seniors last day is May 13, grades 9-11 will have the last day of school as May 20, 2020.
No decision has been made on graduation. It is my sincere hope that we are able to have a celebration of some sort. We can’t say what that looks like just yet. I’m open to ideas and have been following conversations around the state and country to learn what other districts are discussing.
